Term Life Insurance for Families: The Most Protection per Dollar

If people depend on your paycheck, term life insurance is usually the first policy to own. It covers you for a set number of years at a price that never changes, and it costs far less than most people expect.

A simple rule: pick a term that lasts until your youngest child is on their own and your mortgage is paid off. For many young families that is 20 or 30 years.

How term life works

You choose an amount and a length, usually 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 years. The price is locked for that whole period. If you die during the term, your family gets the full amount, tax free in most cases. If you outlive the term, the coverage ends, which is fine, because by then the kids are grown and the house is paid.

Mortgage protection, done the smart way

Banks and mail offers sell "mortgage protection" policies that pay the lender and shrink as your balance shrinks. A regular term policy sized to your mortgage usually works better. The benefit stays level, it goes to your family instead of the bank, and they decide whether paying off the house is the best use of the money.

How much coverage to buy

Do not skip the stay at home parent. If that parent died, the family would pay for childcare, transportation and household help. A policy on them is usually inexpensive and very important.

Two features worth asking about

Conversion. Most term policies let you convert to permanent coverage later without new health questions. If your health changes, that option can be priceless. Living benefits. Many term policies now let you access part of the benefit early for a serious illness. I explain those in my living benefits guide. A child rider can also add small coverage for your kids on the same policy.

When to buy

The best time is usually right after a big life change. A new baby, a new house, a marriage. Your price is based on your age and health the day you apply, so locking it in early saves money for the whole term. If you are new parents, my guide on health coverage for a new baby covers the health side of that same moment.

Bottom line

Term life is simple, affordable and does exactly what a young family needs. Tell me your ages, income and mortgage, and I will suggest an amount and a length, then compare insurers to find the lowest price your health qualifies for.

Common questions

How long should a term life insurance policy be?

Pick a term that lasts until your youngest child is independent and your mortgage is paid off. For many young families that means 20 or 30 years. Shorter terms of 10 or 15 years fit people closer to retirement.

Is term life better than mortgage protection insurance?

Usually yes. A regular level term policy sized to your mortgage pays your family the full amount and lets them decide how to use it, while many mortgage protection policies pay the lender and shrink as the balance falls.

Does a stay at home parent need life insurance?

Yes. If a stay at home parent died, the family would need to pay for childcare and household help. Term coverage on that parent is usually inexpensive.

What happens when a term life policy ends?

Coverage stops and there is no payout. Many policies let you convert to permanent coverage before the term ends without new health questions, which protects you if your health changes.
