How much is health insurance per month in Florida?

At full price, a 40 year old in Florida pays about $473 to $539 a month for the cheapest bronze plan and about $645 to $718 for the benchmark silver plan, depending on the county. With a tax credit, most Floridians pay far less, around $106 a month on average in 2026. Here is what decides where you land.

The short version: your age and your income decide your Florida premium far more than your county. Under 400 percent of the poverty line ($63,840 for one person, $132,000 for a family of four in 2027) you get a credit. Above it, you pay full price.

What a 40 year old pays in Florida, county by county

These are real 2026 marketplace prices from the federal plan file, for one 40 year old, before any tax credit. The benchmark silver plan matters most because your subsidy is calculated from it.

The spread is real but not huge. Pinellas is the cheapest of these counties for a 40 year old, with a bronze plan at $473 and a benchmark silver at $645. Lee and Sarasota sit at the top, with benchmark silver near $717 to $718. Where you live in Florida moves the price by roughly 10 percent. Your age and your income move it far more.

How age changes the monthly price

ACA plans price by age, and the curve gets steep after 50. Here is Hillsborough County, where my office is, at full price:

AgeCheapest bronzeBenchmark silverCheapest gold
Age 21$374$507$466
Age 30$425$576$528
Age 40$478$648$595
Age 50$668$906$832
Age 60$1,016$1,377$1,264

Hillsborough County, one person, monthly, plan year 2026, before tax credits.

A 60 year old pays about 2.1 times what a 40 year old pays for the same plan, and about 2.7 times what a 21 year old pays. That is why the subsidy matters so much for people in their late 50s and early 60s, and why losing it hurts them the most.

What couples and families pay

Each person on the plan is priced by age and the premiums are added together. In Hillsborough County:

Adult 40 plus one child$765$1,037$951
Couple, both 40$957$1,297$1,190
Couple 40 plus two children$1,529$2,073$1,902
Couple, both 60$2,032$2,754$2,527

Hillsborough County, monthly, plan year 2026, before tax credits.

Before and after the subsidy

The premium tax credit works like this. The government decides what share of your income you should pay for the benchmark silver plan, and covers the rest. You can then spend that credit on any metal level. For 2027, the IRS set that share between 2.15 percent and 10.22 percent of income, and it applies only up to 400 percent of the poverty line, which is $63,840 for one person and $132,000 for a family of four.

Here is how that plays out in Hillsborough County using 2026 prices and the 2027 percentages. Treat these as illustrations, because 2027 prices post when open enrollment starts.

Estimates only. Your actual credit depends on your ZIP code, ages, household size and final 2027 prices. Try my subsidy calculator for your own numbers.

Look at the jump between $50,000 and $65,000 for one person, or between $100,000 and $135,000 for a family. That is the subsidy cliff. Crossing 400 percent of the poverty line by a single dollar ends the credit completely, and the enhanced credits that used to soften it expired at the end of 2025.

Why gold can cost less than silver in Florida

In 8 of the 12 Florida counties in my data, the cheapest gold plan costs less than the cheapest silver plan at full price. That sounds backwards. It happens because insurers load extra cost into silver premiums to cover the cost sharing help they owe lower income silver enrollees, a practice called silver loading, and it continues into 2027. If you are paying full price or close to it, never assume silver is the middle option. Compare gold first.

What the averages hide

CMS reports that Floridians who picked a 2026 plan averaged $806 a month before tax credits and $106 a month after. That low number is real, but it is an average dominated by lower incomes. If your household earns above the 400 percent line, your number is the full price in the tables above.

Going without is its own cost. Census puts Florida's 2024 uninsured rate at 10.9 percent, well above the 8.2 percent national rate, and one hospital stay can cost more than years of premiums.

My honest take

If your income is well under the 400 percent line, you may not need me at all. HealthCare.gov will show you the subsidized price, and the lowest cost silver or gold plan with your doctors is usually the right call. Where I earn my keep is the full price crowd: self employed Floridians, business owners and households near the cliff, where the right plan type and a smart income estimate can be worth thousands a year.
